Day 6: The Call to Life

For 450 each day, Option Line is the call to life[1].

Women fearing or facing unexpected pregnancy have difficult decisions to make.  They can choose to parent, abort, or adopt out.  The choices can be confusing and the pressures overwhelming.

The Option Line is a free 24-hour phone line or chat for women in crisis pregnancies.  The helpline gives

  • medically-accurate information
  • a compassionate, listening ear
  • referrals for free pregnancy tests and help at pregnancy care centers nationwide.

The Option Line advocates for the best interest of the woman.  All women have the right to receive accurate information before making a decision that will change the rest of their life.

A friend of mine was telling me yesterday that she had an abortion nine years ago that has deeply cut into her life.  She told me that she wants to help women in crisis pregnancies because, if just one person had helped her in her time of crisis, she would have chosen life for her child.

I would challenge Planned Parenthood, which makes the claim, “Most women ultimately feel relief after an abortion”[3] to back that up with fact, or to visit  Many women do experience guilt and/or trauma after an abortion and not just for a “little while”[3].  These women find it difficult to move past their abortion.  The agony these women feel from their decision can result in

  • Bouts of crying
  • Depression
  • Guilt
  • Inability to forgive yourself
  • Intense grief / sadness
  • Anger / rage
  • Emotional numbness
  • Sexual problems or promiscuity
  • Eating disorders
  • Lowered self esteem
  • Drug and alcohol abuse
  • Nightmares and sleep disturbances
  • Suicidal urges
  • Difficulty with relationships
  • Anxiety and panic attacks
  • Flashbacks
  • Multiple abortions
  • Pattern of repeat crisis pregnancy
  • Discomfort around babies or pregnant women
  • Fear / ambivalence of pregnancy[2]

Many would accuse pro-life organizations of making up or exaggerating these symptoms.  Visit or find out for yourself if these claims are make-believe.  Visit the message board to see the testimonies of many women and men who are struggling with past abortions.

The belief that abortion can be the best choice for a woman is based on the fallacy that removing the child from her womb will remove the child from her memory.  Many women who have had abortions struggle to move past the regret of what could have been.  Post-abortion counseling, support groups, and message boards attest to this regret.  Watch a free video here.

The Option Line is one part of the movement to help women.  The Option Line is a piece of the preventative part of the movement.  Post-abortion help is offered freely by sites like or, but we would be ineffective if this was our only focus.  Many women who have abortions wish they had been given more information, offered more support, and/or not felt pressured or coerced to have an abortion.  What the abortion industry doesn’t what you to know is that some of the women who help at pregnancy care centers have had an abortion and are adamant about protecting other women from experiencing what they have gone through.

That’s why today’s mission focus is the Option Line.

Heartbeat International, the source of Option Line, has an incredible vision statement on their site:

How unsatisfying to be merely against abortion.  Join Heartbeat in the death-defying, soul-satisfying, God-glorifying work of providing real women and couples the compassionate help they need to choose life.

You can help Heartbeat by donating to help the Option Line.  It costs about $1,200 for each 24-hour day for the Option Line to offer help to women through their website, chat feature, email, and of course phone line.

Here are two facts about Jesus:

  • Jesus loves women.  (There are really too many stories about Jesus healing or reaching out to women in need to document here.  You must read Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John to see the full picture.)
  • Jesus loves children.  (Jesus not only healed and blessed children in His ministry, He also advocated for them and equated the Kingdom of Heaven to being made for the child-like.  Again, you must read the Gospels to see the full picture.)

If you are a Jesus follower, you are called to love women and children.

Please pray for the volunteers and staff each day who deal with the God-sized load of helping women in crisis pregnancy, carefully dealing with fake callers who try to hold up the line to prevent women who desperately need help from calling in, and funding the project without a penny of government funding.  Christians have in many ways lost the responsibility for caring for the needy of America due to the welfare system, but we have a special opportunity to show our care for women in their time of life-and-death need.

On a final note, I volunteer at a pregnancy care center, and I have never once heard of any woman who, after choosing to have her child, storms in angrily to us, holds her baby up for us to see, and says, “See?  I told you I should have had an abortion!”  Rather, the new mothers proudly show their babies to the pregnancy care center volunteers and staff.  The baby is decked out in new baby ‘show-off’ clothes and the mother is unconditionally in love.

The Option Line isn’t just to save babies.  It’s to save mommies, too.

A thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy. But I came so that my sheep will have life and so that they will have everything they need. (Jesus, quoted in John 10:10, GW)
